About this course

Do you wonder why people behave the way they do? How our minds evolved? Why we crave fats and sugars? Why we fear snakes and enjoy gossip? Evolutionary Psychology, a combination of evolutionary biology and cognitive psychology, may provide the answers, offering the first truly scientific account of human nature.

Applying modern Darwinism to psychology and human behaviour, you will discover how our complex minds have evolved by a process of natural selection, and why we are designed to face the problems faced by our ancestors. The course will look at areas such as parent-offspring conflict, criminal behaviour, language, mate selection and the benefits and costs of human brain evolution. Expect illustrated presentations, video and discussion as we explore how nature and nurture combine to influence behaviour.

By the end of the course you will have been introduced to some of the evolutionary explanations of human behaviour. You will be aware of the nature of adaptations and their effect on our fears, anxieties and phobias, patterns of mate selection, parenthood, cooperation, brain size, language and even our diet. We’ll also look at some of the criticisms of evolutionary psychology. You will be able to define what evolutionary psychology is, name two of the pioneers, understand the term mismatch and know what a mind module is.

The course assumes no prior knowledge of the subject.
