About this course

Are you concerned about a relative or friend misusing substances like alcohol, drugs or over-the-counter medications? Would you like to know more about the underlying causes of substance misuse and how to support someone living through it? Would you know how to recognise signs of substance misuse? 


On this course we shall consider how the underlying causes of substance misuse, its impact on the lives of people who experience it and on their families’ lives, and types and sources of support to improve wellbeing.   


This half-day course offers a great preliminary learning experience for leading on to our accredited Level 1 CACHE Certificate in Substance Misuse Awareness 


What will be covered on the course?  

  • What is substance misuse? Identify main types of substances which are commonly misused 
  • Reasons why people might misuse substances: understanding different causes for people in misusing substances. 
  • Recognition of signs and symptoms of possible substance misuse 
  • Social impact: reflect on the wider effects of a person’s misuse of substances 
  • Sources of support:  know how to access different forms of support including NHS services, voluntary agencies, peer support and self help 

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?  

  • Define what is meant by substance misuse 
  • Identify the types of substances commonly misused in the UK 
  • Discuss underlying causes for substance misuse 
  • Reflect on signs and symptoms of substance misuse and why it is not always easy to tell if someone is misusing or has another illness 
  • Consider pathways to recovery 
  • Explore sources of support 

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course? 

  • This is a short, introductory course for people with little or no knowledge of substance misuse or the support available. It is very suitable for relatives of family members living with substance misuse, seeking guidance on what substance misuse is, what might cause it, and how to offer support; or for workers who do not specialise in substance misuse, but come into contact through their work with people living with substance misuse, who would like more knowledge and understanding of how to help. It is also suitable for people living with substance misuse who would like to know more about it and how to access support.  

You will need:

  • Note-taking materials -either pen and notepad, voice recorder (learners are very welcome to record oral teaching as a reasonable adjustment but will be asked not to record personal disclosures) 

Learners will be sent  PowerPoint presentations and supplementary handouts. 


This course is based on interactive teaching and learning. Learners are asked to be prepared to participate in quizzes, question and answer, discussions based on personal experience, and case study discussion.  a group contract of confidentiality will be negotiated. 

 

As this course is online, a suitable device such as laptop, smart phone, tablet or computer will be required to access the course.  Zoom will be used for the live sessions and the link will be sent to you once your enrolment has been completed.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
