About this course

This course is for people who want to try out creative writing for the first time. We will focus on short writing exercises, and also use images and prompts to kickstart your writing. Trying out different genres and types of creative writing, including short fiction and poetry, will help develop your knowledge, and the confidence to take your creative writing further.  This course is aimed at beginners, so no experience is necessary.   


We will cover topics such as: 


- Awareness of types of creative writing – fiction/short fiction/poetry.  

- Having a go at writing in different forms  

- Techniques used in creative writing that ‘hook’ a reader and keep them interested.  

- Using prompts such as objects and images to provide inspiration for writing 

- Understanding the role of feedback in developing your creative writing 

- Techniques to develop a writing habit 


Resources required by attendees

  • Pen and notepad, preferably A4 notebook

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.


Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).


As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:
