First Up 2026

In May, Jam Café hosted First Up, the first event in a new two-part gig series designed to give young musicians a welcoming and supportive space to perform live. 

First Up was created as a low-key, intimate opportunity for young people to perform to their friends, family and regular Jamcafé audiences. Bringing together young musicians from Inspire Youth Arts’ music projects at East Leake Academy, Carlton le Willows Academy, South Notts Academy, Rock School and Music Makers, the evening celebrated young people at all stages of their musical journey. 

For some performers, the night was their first ever experience of performing live! Others had a little more experience under their belts and used the opportunity to trial new songs in front of a live audience. With a mix of newcomers and more experienced young artists, the evening was a brilliant showcase of the talent, creativity and hard work taking place across Inspire Youth Arts music projects. 

The atmosphere at Jamcafé was incredibly supportive, with the audience cheering on every performer and staying throughout the whole event. It was clear how much work and dedication the young people had put into developing their skills, and First Up provided a space where they could take risks, try something new and grow in confidence. 

One parent shared:  “We were all so inspired and in awe of everyone who allowed themselves to be vulnerable and perform something from their heart last week. It was a privilege to be in the audience. Coming along to the group every week has helped Summer believe in herself and grow in confidence. The work you do, and the time, energy and compassion you give, are beyond measure. You influence how the children feel about themselves and their talents in the best way possible. We will always be so grateful to have had this group available.” 

Another parent reflected on the experience: “Thank you again, Nina, and everyone, for last night and, of course, for all the work and preparation leading up to it this year. We couldn't have hoped for a more supportive, knowledgeable and sensitive team or environment for Seth, and that clearly showed in the support everyone gave each other at the Jamcafé. It was a night we'll certainly never forget!” 

First Up demonstrated the importance of creating accessible performance opportunities where young people can build confidence, develop their musical skills and, most importantly, feel supported to be themselves on stage. 

The event is the first part of the First Up / Next Up gig series, with Next Up continuing to provide young musicians with opportunities to perform, develop and share their music with a live audience. 

A huge well done to every young person who took to the stage, and thank you to their families, friends and the Jamcafé audience for creating such a positive and encouraging environment. The talent and confidence on display made First Up a brilliant celebration of the young musicians and the work happening across Inspire Youth Arts’ music projects.
