Newark
Creates is a cultural programme of events and activities for all
ages, which is being developed as part of Newark’s High Streets Heritage Action
Zone.
The High
Streets Heritage Action Zones scheme, backed by government funding, aims to help with the recovery
of local high streets, from regenerating historic buildings to helping to
engage local communities through art and cultural projects. The project began in 2021.
Historic England is leading the High
Streets Cultural Programme in partnership with National Lottery Heritage Fund
and the Arts Council England.
Newark Creates is led by Newark’s Cultural Consortium, which is made up of several
local organisations including Inspire, Newark
and Sherwood District Council, Newark Civic Trust, Newark Heritage Trust, Newark
Book Festival, Newark Town Council, and Newark College (Schools of Violin, Piano and Woodwind).
The aim
is to build a programme that will celebrate Newark’s heritage and community and
help local organisations, communities and stakeholders to embed and sustain the
benefit of the High Street Heritage Action Zone project in the future.
In 2023, Newark Creates received additional funding from
Arts Council England, Shared Prosperity, and Cultural Heart of Newark, to connect
arts and culture to community and place. There is a large programme of free
activities and events taking place alongside artist in residences. This also
includes the ADHD Foundation - Neurodiversity Charity Umbrella Installation.
