Virtual exhibition

Voices title small

Voices presents a thought-provoking collection of poetry created by and with people whose voices, for health, social or age-related reasons, may be rarely heard, combined with photography of those involved.

Poet Ben Norris worked with four very different groups across Nottinghamshire to develop a body of poems that express their experiences, stories and feelings. The groups included elderly people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities, refugees, and people living with or affected by mental health issues. The sessions were documented by lens-based artist Ben Harriott.

The resulting poems and photographs were curated into a touring exhibition, which can be explored in digital form below. They were also published in an anthology which you can view here.

All of the poems featured in the exhibition and the anthology were written especially for the project, with the exception of some by Roy Smedley, which were written earlier in his life, and kindly shared with us by his family.

The project was supported by National Lottery funding through Arts Council England.
