Portable Heritage Resources for Miner2Major: Artist Brief

Inspire: Culture, Learning and Libraries are working in partnership with the Miner2Major Landscape Partnership Scheme to create portable heritage resources for Primary schools.

The resources are being designed to include a multi sensory learning pod (think stunning illustrated and digitally printed tent) that will enhance schools’ delivery of the National Curriculum and create excitement about the rich heritage of Sherwood Forest (see Further Information below for how the pod may look), the pod will be packaged alongside other commissioned supporting artefacts, books and teacher notes.  The portable resource in its entirety is intended to provoke curiosity and inspire pupils to connect with our rich local heritage in line with the National Curriculum.

What we want:

We are seeking an imaginative and open minded artist with experience of working with children in any creative discipline to co-produce artwork to illustrate the pod.

The artist will:

• Collaborate with local school children, inspired by Sherwood Forest including the following themes of a) living things and their habitats and b) seasonal and ecological changes.

• Design and deliver school workshops over summer term 2023 (numbers to be negotiated) in each of the following schools: King Edwin Primary School in Edwinstowe, Abbey Hill Primary and Nursery school in Kirkby in Ashfield and Asquith Primary School in Mansfield.

• Work collaboratively with Sherwood Forest Portable Heritage Resources Project Coordinator and project partners.

• Celebrate the rich heritage of the Sherwood Forest area building on the Miner2Major project themes.

• Create visually inspiring artwork for the tent (interior and exterior) with, or inspired by, the work created by the school children. The resulting work will be digitally printed onto a tent like structure by an external supplier. 3D proposals can be photographed.

Our aims are to:

• Engage children and staff in schools with the rich heritage of Sherwood Forest including the following themes of a) living things and their habitats and b) seasonal and ecological changes.

• Make inspirational artwork

Our outcomes are to:

• Connect with Primary Schools

• Create a portable pop-up tent digitally printed with artwork

Proposed timeline:

• Planning meeting for selected artist – Friday 9th June 2023

• School workshops (approx. 4 delivery days) – end of June/July 2023

• Creation of artwork – August 2023

• Completion of artwork – 15th September 2023

• Digital printing to be completed by 27th October 2023 (external supplier)

Fee:

Fee: £3375 (equivalent of 15 days at £225 per day) with a materials and equipment budget of up to £500.

Total: £3875

The Miner2Major Landscape Partnership Scheme

Miner2Major is a five-year Landscape Partnership Scheme supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. It focusses on the heart of the Sherwood Forest area from Bestwood to Ollerton, and Mansfield to Rufford Abbey, an area that has a distinctive landscape character which is recognised and valued by local people as well as visitors from around the world.

Miner2Major is delivering a range of projects across the area working with partners and engaging with local communities to celebrate its important habitats, special species and rich heritage.
